Overview

The Sponsorship Office is responsible for acting as a liaison between our children and the international family of sponsors (who we call godparents) who support our children and programs financially. When someone becomes a sponsor/godparent, they are assigned a child with whom they correspond and they can communicate via letters, email and also send presents for special occasions. Together, with the foreign fundraising offices and local team, this position helps support communication between the child and their godparents and also with the many administrative and logistical tasks that the office has.

Often godparents will visit their godchildren and come to the home either individually, with their families or in larger donor groups. Those who work in the Sponsorship Department help plan and see out these visits.

Computer skills are necessary as well as the ability to work with children. Spanish and English skills are required, while any additional language greatly increases the amount of work you can do. We are in constant correspondence with the offices in the US, Germany, Austria, Holland, France and Italy. Often the role of the volunteer is to help translate letters.

The volunteer fills the role as the assistant to this office. This volunteer works in the office mainly, while many tasks are around the home. The tasks vary depending on the home but volunteer tasks could also include working on correspondence with the children, helping take annual photos of our children, translation, and accompany visiting godparents.

Other Responsibilities

Each volunteer chooses an hogar (group of children of the same age living together) at the beginning of their year. Each home’s Volunteer Coordinator will communicate the expectations for hogar time. Usually, it is six days a week, 6 to 8 p.m., but this might vary per home. This has been described as the most fulfilling part of volunteering, the bond and relationships formed with their hogar of children.

Volunteers have every other weekend off, as well as up to 22 days of vacation time after four months of service. Vacation must be arranged according to the specific home’s policies.

All NPH volunteers receive room and board, access to medical care and a monthly stipend. Volunteers pay for their transportation to and from the home and medical insurance. Volunteers must serve for at least one year.
