Lea* is a pequeña who comes from the region of Guerrero. She arrived at NPH Mexico when she was 8 years old. She never went to school, so she did not know how to read and write. Now, five years later, Lea enjoys reading fables; reading is her favorite subject.

Lea is studying in the Special Education Program, where NPH works with children that arrive with learning and language disabilities.

“Most of the intellectual problems that children have are due to the little stimulation they received in their home environment, lack of care, malnutrition or poor attention in their education on behalf of parents or relatives,” says Citlali Flores, Coordinator of the Education Psychology Department of NPH Mexico.

For Lea, being in this program has been a fun way to learn, because in addition to basic elementary subjects such as Spanish, geography or math, she takes crafts and cooking workshops; she loves to prepare delicious desserts! Some of Lea’s classmates, who also have speech impairments, receive language therapy.

“In addition to learning to read and write, what I most like is the cooking workshop. I have learned to make and decorate cakes, cookies, empanadas and to cook mole and rice, which I really like,” says Lea with a smile.

NPH Mexico works hard to help every one of our children break out of the cycle of poverty that traps too many youths in Latin America and the Caribbean. We know that every student is different, and that every student has different strengths and weaknesses, so we try and give every student the tools they need to best succeed. Through our Special Education Program, we work to prepare all students, regardless of the difficulties present in their lives, with the chance to develop successfully into their adult lives.
