Visiting the farm at a very young age helps a Pequeño discover his interest in animals and plants. Now that he is a teenager, his dreams are set on studying more about it. März 12, 2019 - El Salvador
Denis is in his element on the farm. He acts so naturally and he seems comfortable surrounded by animals.
Denis is just 15 years old. In school, his favorite subject is science. Outside of school, he loves spending time on the farm. He loves animals, plants, and all things related. “I really like to breathe the fresh air and feel how the sun warms up my skin. I love to see all the different colors of the landscape. Even the smell of the soil is nice.”
He smiles as he remembers past visits to the farm. His interest began when he was a little child, “The very first time I visited the farm I was around eight years old. The caregivers took us there and I learned how to milk a cow. It was super funny.”
Denis came to NPH El Salvador when he was four years old. Since then he has learned many things. School was definitely a new experience and throughout these 12 years, he’s had diverse meaningful moments. He recalls one such moment when his teacher and classmates started a vegetable patch as part of a school project.
“I was in third grade when we had a little garden with our teacher. We grew cucumbers and radishes. I remember I found it very interesting. I was thrilled about it all.” As time passed, Denis grew and his interest in agriculture did as well. “When the time comes, I would like to study agronomy. I think it is very interesting that one knows how to work the soil properly and I love spending time outdoors.”
El Salvador is a country with a large percentage of people in need. Starvation and lack of medical care affect many families nowadays. Though young, Denis is aware of the situation in his country. He reflects, “It is really sad, but it is real. A friend of my mother, who is very old, lives by himself and has no access to healthcare and doesn’t have anything to eat. His neighbors help him and give him food.”
He also recognizes the importance of education in people’s lives to help them improve their conditions. “I will always look for a way to study. So far I’ve learned about so many different topics. I know I’ll never stop learning.”
Denis considers programs like NPH the key to changing people’s lives, just as it has changed his. “It is thanks to NPH that I am able to have everything I need.”
Supporting Pequeños as they discover their abilities and interests is one of the things we enjoy most at NPH. Denis is on his way to encountering a whole world full of opportunities and promise for a better life.
